About this tool

Page numbers are the thing you notice missing right before a document goes out. A contract people will cite by page, a report that's getting printed and passed around a meeting, a scanned stack that never had numbers to begin with. Pick a corner and a format, and every page gets its number, with a preview on the page before you download anything.

Three settings, and that's the whole tool. Position: any of the four corners, or centered top or bottom. Format: the bare number, 1 / 10, Page 1, or Page 1 of 10. And the starting number, for when this PDF is section three of something bigger and should open at 47. The numbers go in as real text in a standard font, so they stay sharp at any zoom and print cleanly.

pdf-lib does the numbering in your browser. The file is read into memory, numbered, and handed back as a download, and the original on disk isn't touched. Given what people tend to number (contracts, statements, filings), not shipping them off to a server for a one-line change seems like the least a tool can do.

Frequently asked questions

Where can the page numbers go?
Any of the four corners, or centered along the top or bottom edge. Pick a spot on the little page diagram and the preview shows you exactly where the numbers land.
Can I start numbering from a number other than 1?
Yes. Set "Start at" to whatever the first page should say. Handy when the PDF continues a larger document. Every page counts up from there, and the "of N" total adjusts to match.
What number formats are available?
The bare number (1), number over total (1 / 10), a worded label (Page 1), or the full form (Page 1 of 10). The numeric ones work in any language; the worded ones are English.
Can I skip numbering the cover page?
Not yet, every page gets a number in this version. If you have a cover, the workaround is to pick a start value that makes the body pages read the way you want. A skip-first-page option is on the list.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
pdf-lib stamps the numbers into each page directly inside your browser tab and hands the result back as a download. A change this small shouldn't need a round trip to a server, and it doesn't: there's nothing for the network panel to show.
