About this tool

PDFs carry hidden document properties. A title, an author name, the software that made the file, timestamps, sometimes keywords or a subject line. Most people never look, but the data rides along whenever you email a contract or post a résumé, and anyone who checks can see who made the file and with what. Here you can read all of it, change any field, or wipe the lot in one go before the file leaves your hands.

There are two layers, and both matter. The document information fields (Title, Author, Subject, Keywords, Creator, Producer) live in one place. The XMP packet, an XML block that editors like Acrobat write and that viewers often trust over the visible fields, lives in another. Plenty of metadata removers only clear the first layer and leave your name sitting in the second. Editing a field here rewrites the document information and drops the stale XMP so your version is the one that counts. Remove all clears every field, both dates, and every XMP packet in the file.

The rewrite happens in your browser with pdf-lib. A privacy cleanup that began by sending your file across the internet would defeat itself, so the whole job stays local. Pages, text, and images are left exactly alone. Only the metadata around them changes.

What metadata can I see and change?
The standard document-information fields: Title, Author, Subject, Keywords, Creator, and Producer, plus the creation and modification dates shown for reference. Edit any field and download, or clear a field to delete just that one.
Does "Remove all metadata" really remove everything?
It clears every document-information field, both dates, and the XMP metadata packet, on the document catalog and on each page. And it deletes the underlying XMP object rather than just unlinking it, so the old text isn't left sitting in the file where a parser could still find it.
What is XMP metadata and why does it matter?
XMP is a second metadata format, an XML packet that many editors write alongside the classic fields. Viewers often prefer the XMP values over the visible ones, so a tool that only clears the visible fields can leave your name in the XMP. This one removes both.
Does editing the metadata change the pages or content?
No. Pages, text, images, and layout stay byte-for-byte the same. One caveat: dropping the XMP packet breaks PDF/A conformance, since PDF/A depends on it. For everyday documents that changes nothing.
Is any of this uploaded?
No. The point is to take a name out of a file, and that does not require showing the file to anyone: pdf-lib reads and rewrites the metadata locally, and the document stays on your device the entire time.
